Pip & Pop...We miss you magic land!

Ok,Magic Land...I have been meaning to write this post for a little while now but I keep getting distracted! This magical exhibition by Perth-based artist duo Pip & Pop (Nicole Andrijevic and Tanya Schultz)is currently showing at Brisbane's Gallery of Modern Art. It is a breathtaking and awesome feast for your eyes. All the installations are scaled down and are really quite miniature - not that you really get a sense of this from my photo's. The delicacy and attention to detail is fascinating and every time you look at the work you see something new!

"Drawing on children’s stories, creation myths, Buddhist cosmologies, video games and folktales, Pip & Pop create large-scale fantasy worlds coloured with a bright, often fluorescent palette, using cake-decorating tools, intricate layers of sugar, glitter, modelling clay and mirrors"

"Pathways and peepholes will lead visitors to different worlds: a magical forest filled with strange flowers, vines, mushrooms and animals; a cosmic universe condensed into a darkened room with twinkly stars; and a volcanic lake with crystals, mist and liquid pools are just some of the creations waiting to be discovered"

The Future

 The Future 2011, Written and directed by Miranda July. Starring Miranda July, Hamish Linklater and David Warshofsky.

The Future is a whimsical film about a non committal couple in their mid 30’s who have been together for 4 years but appear to lead a “boring life”. Jason is  a tech support worked who works from home and Sophie is a children's dance teacher who is trying to make a you-tube dance video in her spare time. Sophie and Jason decide to about to adopt a sick talking cat called Paw Paw. They find out that they can’t take Paw Paw  home for a month and realise they want to spend the next 30 days living before the shackles of owning a pet “tie them down”. They turn off the internet and quit their jobs only to find things don’t really go according to plan....

I loved this film, not only because of the beautifully minimalistic way it’s shot but because Miranda July seems to carry through her quirky sense of style which is reflected in the characters, their relationships and interactions with each other.

It was really my cup of tea.

The Women

If you haven't see The Women, you simply must watch my favorite film of ALL time. This 1939 flick starring Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, Rosalind Russell, Joan Fontain, Hedder Hopper must have rocked some boats at the time. Also, note that this film has a cast made of entirely woman yet the film is entirely about men! The costumes, makeup and hair are divine and cannot be faulted. "Wealthy Mary Haines is unaware her husband is having an affair with shopgirl Crystal Allen. Sylvia Fowler and Edith Potter discover this from a manicurist and arrange for Mary to hear the gossip. On the train taking her to a Reno divorce Mary meets the Countess and Miriam (in an affair with Fowler's husband). While they are at Lucy's dude ranch, Fowler arrives for her own divorce and the Countess meets fifth husband-to-be Buck. Back in New York, Mary's ex is now unhappily married to Crystal who is already in an affair with Buck. When Sylvia lets this story slip at a country club dinner, Crystal brags of her plans for a still wealthier marriage, only to find the Countess is the source of all Buck's money. Crystal must return to the perfume counter and Mary runs back to her husband."

Cannibal Capers...

These are treasures all right, I am so inspired by Disney's Silly Symphonies cartoons right now, especially the crazy macabre plots, synchronized music, the timing and the way it all comes together.

"The Silly Symphonies were a series of musically-themed animated shorts that launched in 1929 and ended exactly ten years later in 1939. Disney's chief composer Carl Stalling (who would later reach even greater fame as the main Looney Tunes composer for Warner Bros.) began to grow weary of writing music to match the pre-determined action and gags of the animation in his early shorts. Stalling prompted the concept of animation dictated by the flow of music instead. With this, Walt eventually produced a line of unique, unrelated animated shorts known as the Silly Symphonies. Shown before the feature film along with newsreels and serials, the Symphonies did not feature known cartoon characters like Mickey Mouse and the concept was a slow start with Walt's distributor at the time".

Clog it UP with Swedish Hasbeens

I have been in LOVE with Swedish Hasbeens for years now and in particular the Braided Sky High...and I think it's time I got a pair to match back perfectly with all my 50's vintage summer dresses!

My problem is that I cannot choose a colour...I am leaning towards Nature (bottom) but then I like the Black and the Red and the Mint and the Yellow and the Pink....

The Importance of a Dead End Street :

I discovered Dead End Street by The Kinks and The Importance of Being Idle by Oasis some time ago but have been recently rediscovering them on my ipod. Evidently, Oasis were hugely influenced by The Kinks - not hard to imagine why. Check out the video's below, both clips are GREAT and I love the shoes!

Elizabeth Gilbert on nurturing creativity

Eat, Prey, Love author Elizabeth Gilbert talks on TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design - idea's worth spreading) about ideals of genius in history and contemporary society, living up to expectations as a creative and how she copes with and nurtures her creative pressures after the success of her book, Eat, Prey, Love.

I found Gilbert's discussion very worthwhile as she raises some interesting points that challenge what we accept. Her clear points and structured conversation was all encompassing, informative and really got me thinking! Take a look...

Fire in Babylon

What an inspiring film, I am not a cricket enthusiast at the best of times so when the opportunity presented to see Fire in Babylon, as part of the Revelation Film Festival I must admit I was vacillant, but not having seen a film in some time thought it would be interesting to step outside of my comfort zone. Not only did the film manage to hold my attention for it's duration but I walked out feeling inspired and a whole lot wiser about the West Indian cricket team.

No other team dominated their sport for 15 years - and would we know it?

"Fire In Babylon is the breathtaking story of how the West Indies triumphed over its colonial masters through the achievements of one of the most gifted teams in sporting history.

I urge you to see Fire in Babylon for if not inspiration, knowledge and historical reference then at least for the really cool Rastafarian music and great 70's fashion!
